Table of Contents
Logistics & Planning: Do I need a permit to elope in Joshua Tree?
Yes. Whether you are having a “just us” elopement ceremony or an intimate ceremony with guests, you will need to acquire a Special Park Use Permit.
How much does a Joshua Tree elopement permit cost?
$120.00

What are the best locations for an elopement in Joshua Tree?
These are my personal favorite ceremony locations that have been approved by the park:
Cap Rock
Max capacity: 25 people, 8 cars
Cap Rock is an iconic elopement location in Joshua Tree, which offers some gorgeous views of the surrounding desert. This short trail is under a mile long but has plenty of romantic spots, and unique rock formations for you to backdrop your ceremony against.
Split Rock
Max capacity: 15 people, 5 cars
This ceremony location is one of the smaller spots in Joshua Tree, with a limit of 15 people allowed to be present for your elopement. But the hike itself is just so pretty, and at 2 miles long, it serves as the perfect path to take on your wedding day.
Rattlesnake Picnic Area
Max capacity: 20 people, 8 cars
The Rattlesnake Picnic Area offers various areas to be explored, and many different backdrops for your exchange of vows. Get here early enough, and you’ll have this magical spot to yourself!
Hidden Valley Picnic Area
Max capacity: 35 people, 8 cars
The Hidden Valley Picnic Area has plenty of wide-open areas, Joshua Trees, and unusual rock formations. It is one of the most popular elopement locations in Joshua Tree; however, it is only open from June through to January — so always make sure to plan ahead before settling on this location.
Quail Springs Picnic Area
Max capacity: 15 people, 8 cars
The Quail Spring Picnic Area is the first one you are allowed to stop at while driving through the park. There are usually rock climbers here as well as other tourists. Unless you are on a tight timeline, I recommend driving further into the park for your ceremony so you can have the place more to yourself.
Indian Cove Amphitheater
Max capacity: 100 people, 1 car
If you want a larger group, the Indian Cove Amphitheater is the largest wedding venue inside the park. You will have to shuttle in your guests because the permit only allows one car to be parked. The amphitheater is a blank canvas, and skies-the-limit to creativity! Some floral arrangements and some oriental rugs will do the stage area wonders. Seating is provided by the fixed benches.

When is the best time of year to elope in Joshua Tree?
Many people love eloping to Joshua Tree National Park during the spring and fall. Many Joshua Tree wedding photographers and elopement photographers will recommend the spring and summer, but personally, I don’t mind the summer as long as the couple books my sunrise + sunset elopement package. In the summer, you will want to avoid being outside during the daytime. With the sunrise + sunset elopement package, we will be doing the session during the cooler parts of the day with dreamy sunlight. However, spring and fall are wonderful times of the year to choose to elope in the park.

How do I get a marriage license in California for a Joshua Tree elopement?
You can obtain a California marriage license in any county in California, and bring it with you to Joshua Tree National Park. Many eloping couples who are California residents obtain their CA marriage license in the county they live in. Couples who are from out of state obtain their marriage license in LA county or Palm Spring – depending on where they fly into. Out-of-state residents can also complete the paperwork in their home state so they don’t have to worry about the legalities upon arrival to California. At that point, they will have a “symbolic” ceremony since they are already legally married.

Can we bring guests to our elopement?
Yes! I personally allow up to 10 guests.
Are there any guest limits for a Joshua Tree elopement?
Yes, each approved ceremony site in Joshua Tree has guest limits.
- Cap Rock – Max capacity: 25 people, 8 cars
- Split Rock – Max capacity: 15 people, 5 cars
- Rattlesnake Picnic Area – Max capacity: 20 people, 8 cars
- Hidden Valley Picnic Area – Max capacity: 35 people, 8 cars
- Quail Springs Picnic Area – Max capacity: 15 people, 8 cars
- Indian Cove Amphitheater – Max capacity: 100 people, 1 car
What time of day is best for photos in Joshua Tree?
Sunrise and sunset are my personal favorite times of day for photography in Joshua Tree National Park, but I have also taken many photos during the daytime, which is also beautiful! However, I highly advise against being in Joshua Tree National Park during the day in the summertime.

Rules & Regulations: Are there any restrictions on decor, chairs, or arches for an elopement in Joshua Tree?
In comparison to other National Parks, Joshua Tree’s rules on ceremony items is quite generous! Note: Items must be listed on your application for consideration. If there are none listed when we receive your application, you will not be permitted to add them later.
Here’s a list of approved items you can have for your ceremony:
- Arch – must be free-standing and is not permitted to be placed into the ground. Plan accordingly with your arch set up time.
- Small table for guest book
- Cooler with water
- Live or fake flowers only
- Battery-powered candles
- Small Runner
- Small Rug
- Cake
- Champagne
Here’s a list of the items that you are not permitted to have:
- The use of amplified music, microphones, or speakers.
- The release/dispersal of living or inanimate objects (e.g. butterflies, bird seed, rice, or flower petals).
- Unattended food items.
- Decorations (e.g. balloons, directional signage).
- The use of furniture at the ceremony site (consideration is given to those with special needs). Use existing picnic tables and benches where available.
- Restricting visitor use or blocking the flow of traffic.
- Pets are not allowed on trails, or paths. If you plan on having a pet at the ceremony this will need to be approved by the Special Park Uses Office.
- Drones
- All dried flowers (e.g. Pampas Grass and other dried florals)
- Non-battery powered candles
- Bubbles
- Smoke Bombs
- Sparklers and Fireworks

Can we bring pets to our Joshua Tree elopement?
Pets are not allowed on trails, or paths. If you plan on having a pet at the ceremony, this will need to be approved by the Special Park Uses Office.
Due to the fact that there really aren’t any paved trails in Joshua Tree National Park, I advise against bringing your dog with you to your elopement. There are many thornes and rattlesnakes in the park, and you will be very distracted if something happens to your pet on your wedding day.

Are drones allowed for wedding photography in Joshua Tree?
No. Drones are not permitted in any National Park.
Can we have a reception or celebration inside the park?
No. Other than a champaign toast after the ceremony, I advise against having any type of reception or celebration inside the park. If you want a reception, I recommend booking a vacation rental/Airbnb that allows for intimate gatherings and hiring a private chef.

Are there noise restrictions for ceremonies in Joshua Tree?
Yes. The use of amplified music, microphones, or speakers is not permitted.
Weather & Environment: How hot does it get in Joshua Tree in the summer?
Summers in Joshua Tree National Park are extremely hot, with daytime temperatures often exceeding 100°F and occasionally reaching up to 110°F during heat waves. June, July, and August are the hottest months, with little to no shade in the desert landscape, making outdoor activities challenging and potentially dangerous. This is why purchasing the sunrise + sunset package is necessary during the summer months. In the early morning and evening after the sun goes down, it’s a very pleasant temperature to be outdoors for astrophotography! There are also many folks out watching the stars at night!
Here’s a chart of the average temperature per month in Joshua Tree National Park:
Month | Average High °F | Average Low °F |
---|---|---|
January | 60°F | 37°F |
February | 64°F | 39°F |
March | 71°F | 44°F |
April | 79°F | 50°F |
May | 87°F | 58°F |
June | 97°F | 67°F |
July | 102°F | 73°F |
August | 101°F | 72°F |
September | 94°F | 66°F |
October | 82°F | 54°F |
November | 69°F | 43°F |
December | 60°F | 36°F |

What should we wear for a Joshua Tree elopement?
When eloping in Joshua Tree National Park, your outfit should be a mix of style, comfort, and practicality to suit the rugged desert terrain and varying temperatures.
Footwear:
Closed-toe shoes are a must! The desert is full of thorns, sharp rocks, and cacti, so opt for sturdy boots, hiking shoes, or stylish ankle boots to stay comfortable and protected—especially if you plan to explore Joshua Tree’s rocky landscapes and boulders.
Wedding Attire:
Lightweight, breathable fabrics like chiffon, linen, or silk work best to keep you cool during warmer months. Flowing dresses look stunning in the desert wind and photograph beautifully against the iconic Joshua Tree backdrops.
If you’re wearing a suit, go for a light, breathable fabric like linen or cotton rather than heavy wool. You can also ditch the tie for a more relaxed, boho look.
Seasonal Considerations:
Spring/Summer: Loose, airy outfits are best for warmer days. A wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen are great additions to protect from the intense desert sun.
Fall/Winter: The desert can be surprisingly cold, especially in the early mornings and after sunset. Bring a stylish jacket, shawl, or faux fur wrap to stay warm while still looking elegant in photos.
Extra Tips:
✨ Earthy and neutral tones—such as rust, sage, terracotta, beige, and warm pastels—complement Joshua Tree’s desert landscape beautifully.
Consider an outfit change if you’re opting for sunrise + sunset photography, so you can have a mix of casual and formal looks.
Accessories like hats, flowing veils, or statement jewelry can add a fun, boho touch while elevating your photos.

Is Joshua Tree windy, and how does that affect an elopement?
Joshua Tree National Park is known for its strong winds, which can occur year-round, but they are most common and intense during the spring and fall months.
Peak Windy Season:
Spring (March – May):
- The windiest time of year, with gusts often exceeding 30–40 mph (48–64 km/h).
- High winds are especially common in April, making this month unpredictable for elopements or outdoor activities.
Fall (October – November):
- Winds return in the fall, though typically not as strong as in the spring.
- Cooler temperatures combined with gusty conditions can make the desert feel even chillier, especially in the evenings.
Other Windy Periods:
- Winter storms (December – February) can bring short bursts of strong winds, especially before or after a cold front.
- Summer (June – September) is generally less windy, but occasional monsoon storms can cause sudden gusty winds along with rain.
Where Is It Windiest?
- Higher elevations and open desert areas experience the strongest winds, especially along mountain passes.
- Some areas, like Keys View and the open valleys, tend to be windier than sheltered spots.

What should we pack for a desert elopement?
Essentials for the Couple:
- Water & Electrolytes – The desert is extremely dry, so staying hydrated is key. Bring at least 1 gallon of water per person and electrolyte packets to prevent dehydration.
- Snacks & Light Food – Energy bars, fruit, or nuts will help keep you fueled throughout the day.
- Marriage License & Permits – Ensure you have all necessary legal documents and your event permit.
Wedding Attire & Accessories:
- Sturdy, Closed-Toe Shoes – Protects against rocks, thorns, and cacti while hiking or exploring.
- Lightweight Layers – The desert can be hot during the day and cold at night. A stylish jacket, shawl, or faux fur wrap keeps you warm for sunset or starry night photos.
- Sun Protection – A wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, and SPF 50 sunscreen will keep you protected from intense desert sun.
- Touch-Up Kit – Lip balm, setting spray, blotting papers, and a compact mirror to refresh your look.
Photography & Decor:
- Veil or Flowing Dress – Long, airy fabrics photograph beautifully in the desert wind.
- Lanterns or Battery Candles – Adds a romantic glow for sunset or nighttime photos.
- Champagne or a Special Drink – Perfect for a sunset toast after your ceremony!
Other Must-Haves:
- Phone or GPS Device – Cell service is limited, so download maps in advance.
- Mini First Aid Kit – Includes band-aids, pain relievers, and tweezers (for cactus spines!).
- Headlamp or Flashlight – Essential for navigating after sunset, especially for astro photos.
- Leave No Trace Supplies – Bring reusable water bottles, a trash bag, and eco-friendly wipes to respect the park.

Are there any safety concerns, such as wildlife or terrain hazards?
Joshua Tree National Park is a stunning but rugged desert environment, so it’s important to be aware of potential safety concerns before your elopement.
Wildlife Hazards
- Rattlesnakes – Common in warmer months (spring through fall), especially near rocky areas and bushes. Always watch your step and avoid reaching into crevices.
- Scorpions & Spiders – Active at night; shake out shoes and blankets before using them.
- Fire Ants & Bees – Be cautious when placing picnic setups or bouquets on the ground.
- Coyotes & Other Wildlife – Mostly avoid humans but can be spotted at dawn/dusk. Don’t leave food out.
Terrain & Weather Hazards
- Sharp Rocks & Thorns – Many trails have loose gravel, cacti, and spiky desert plants that can scratch or puncture the skin. Wear closed-toe shoes and watch where you step.
- Extreme Heat – Summer temps exceed 100°F (38°C), increasing risk of heat exhaustion & dehydration. Always carry plenty of water.
- Strong Winds – Especially in spring and fall, high winds can make it difficult to set up decor, wear veils, or keep your hair in place.
- Monsoon Storms & Flash Floods – Late summer can bring sudden thunderstorms. Avoid low-lying areas like washes where water can rise rapidly.
- Limited Cell Service & Navigation – Many areas have no reception. Download offline maps and let someone know your plans in case of an emergency.

Photography & Vendors: Do we need a photographer who specializes in Joshua Tree elopements?
Absolutely! When eloping in Joshua Tree National Park, hiring a photographer with experience in the park makes a huge difference in both your experience and the final photos.
Why Choose a Joshua Tree Elopement Photographer?
Expert Location Scouting – A local photographer knows the best hidden gems, epic rock formations, and quiet spots away from the crowds. They can also recommend the best sunrise & sunset locations for dreamy golden-hour photos.
Mastering Harsh Desert Light – The desert sun can be intense and challenging to photograph. A photographer familiar with Joshua Tree understands how to work with the unique lighting to create stunning images, rather than harsh, overexposed shots.
Navigating Park Logistics & Permits – National parks have strict photography rules. An experienced elopement photographer will guide you through permit requirements and ensure your elopement is fully compliant.
Handling Weather & Terrain Challenges – Joshua Tree can be windy, hot, or unexpectedly cold depending on the season. A seasoned photographer knows how to adapt to changing conditions and keep your session running smoothly.
✨ Bonus: Starry Night & Astro Photography! – Not all photographers can capture Milky Way or astrophotography shots, but Joshua Tree’s dark skies make it an ideal place for them. A photographer who specializes in the park can help plan a timeline that includes these magical starry-night shots!
If you want stress-free planning, breathtaking photos, and someone who truly knows how to bring your desert elopement vision to life, choosing a Joshua Tree elopement photographer is definitely worth it.

What kind of wedding dress or attire works best for a desert elopement?
When choosing wedding attire for a desert elopement in Joshua Tree National Park, you’ll want to focus on comfort, movement, and weather-appropriate fabrics while still looking stunning against the rugged, earthy landscape.
Best Wedding Dresses for a Desert Elopement:
- Lightweight & Breathable Fabrics – Opt for chiffon, lace, tulle, silk, or organza to stay cool and comfortable in the heat. Avoid heavy satin or thick layered gowns, as they can feel too hot.
- Flowy, Boho Styles – A-line, sheath, or flowy skirts look stunning in the desert wind and allow for easy movement over rocky terrain. Consider open-back or sleeveless designs to stay cool.
- Avoid Long Trains – The desert is full of dirt, rocks, and cacti, so a long train can easily get snagged or dirty. If you love the look of a train, choose a detachable option for photos.
- Neutral or Earthy Tones – Whites, creams, rust, sage, terracotta, and warm pastels blend beautifully with Joshua Tree’s desert hues.
Best Suits & Groom’s Attire:
- Linen or Cotton Suits – Lightweight, breathable fabrics help keep you cool under the desert sun. Avoid heavy wool or dark colors that absorb heat.
- Ditch the Tie (or Keep It Casual) – A relaxed, boho or western-inspired look works great for the desert setting. Consider suspenders, a bolo tie, or a stylish hat for extra personality.
Footwear: Stay Comfortable & Safe!
- Closed-Toe Boots or Sturdy Shoes – Avoid heels or open-toed sandals! The desert has sharp rocks, thorns, and uneven ground, so opt for hiking boots, ankle boots, or stylish flats.
- Comfortable & Break Them In! – Make sure your shoes are broken in to avoid blisters on your special day.
Seasonal Considerations:
- Spring & Summer: Stick to light, airy fabrics and bring a sun hat, sunglasses, and SPF to stay protected.
- Fall & Winter: The desert gets cold at night, so bring a stylish jacket, faux fur wrap, or shawl for warmth during sunset and starry-night photos.
