Logistics & Travel
How Do Guests Get To Catalina Island?
There are two ways to get to Catalina Island: by sea or by air. You can either travel publicly or privately. The private option by sea or air is a lot more expensive, and most couples choose to use the passenger ferries. What’s great about these ferries is that they are actually comfortable, covered, and super quick and will have you on the island in roughly an hour.
Ferry Boat
The ferry company that operates this route is Catalina Express. The Express offers transportation in the port cities of Long Beach, San Pedro, and Dana Point. The Catalina Flyer departs from Newport Beach. Both companies offer reasonably priced tickets.

Arrive By Helicopter
If you prefer a more intimate and luxurious experience, consider starting your Catalina Island elopement by flying onto the island by private helicopter. The helicopter ride only takes 15 minutes, and I can recommend several helicopter companies for your ride, depending on where you’d like to depart from. There are helipads in Avalon, Two Harbors, and Airport in the Sky.

Can I Rent A Car When I Get To Catalina Island?
No. Visitors to the island cannot rent cars. But what you can do is rent a golf cart! There are a zillion golf carts on the island; it’s so much fun to rent one! Avalon is walkable, but to get from one side to the other, having a golf cart comes in handy. You can rent golf carts by the hour, or, depending on what hotel or stay accommodation you book, a golf cart may be included.
In addition to getting around Avalon via golf cart, many visitors either walk or call for a taxi van.

Do Guests Need To Book Accommodations On the Island?
Yes. Wheather you are having a “just us” elopement, or a large wedding, you, I recommend that everyone joining you for your wedding will want to book stay accommodations on the island for at least one night, if not two nights – the night before the wedding, and the night of the wedding.
Here’s a list of the luxury and boutique-style hotels that will offer the best experience with views, service, and history.

How Do I Legally Get Married On Catalina Island?
To get legally married on Catalina Island, you will need to get a California marriage license. For couples that hire me, I send them detailed information on how, when, and where to obtain their California marriage license so they come prepared to their elopement! You can obtain your California marriage license in any California county. You cannot obtain your California marriage license on Catalina Island as there are no offices in Avalon, however, there is an office in Long Beach.
You’ll also need someone who is ordained to pronounce you married and sign your marriage license, and guess what? That’s me! I am ordained as well as your guide and photographer! If you plan on having guests and want a more formal ceremony, I am more than happy to give my clients those referrals.
Is A Wedding Permit Required?
If hosting a ceremony at a public beach or park, permits may be necessary. Private venues handle permits for you.

What’s The Best Time Of Year To Get Married On Catalina Island?
Catalina Island has a mild Mediterranean climate, making it a great wedding destination year-round. However, each season offers a unique experience in terms of weather, crowds, and overall vibe. Here’s a breakdown of what to expect in each season:

✅ Why Choose Spring?
- Comfortable temperatures: 60s–70s°F (15–25°C)
- Lush greenery and blooming wildflowers
- Fewer crowds compared to summer
- Ideal for outdoor weddings and elopements
❌ Things to Consider
- Some chances of light rain in March
- Water can still be chilly for swimming or snorkeling
- Hotels and venues may have spring break visitors
Best for: Couples who want a scenic and mild-weather wedding with fewer tourists.

✅ Why Choose Summer?
- Warmest weather: 70s–80s°F (21–27°C)
- Vibrant, lively island atmosphere
- Perfect for beach weddings and water activities
- Longest daylight hours for sunset ceremonies
❌ Things to Consider
- Most crowded and expensive time of year
- Hotel rates and venue prices are at their peak
- Some areas (like Descanso Beach) may have restrictions due to high visitor traffic
- Can be humid in August
Best for: Couples who love a fun, energetic vibe and want a full summer island wedding experience.
🍂 Fall (September – November)
✅ Why Choose Fall?
- Beautiful weather: 70s°F (21–26°C) in September, cooling down in November
- Fewer tourists than summer, but still lively
- Ocean water is warmer than in spring (great for beachgoers)
- More availability for venues and hotels
❌ Things to Consider
- Some attractions and activities (like seasonal boat tours) may close after summer

- Cooler but pleasant temperatures: 50s–60s°F (10–18°C)
- Best for intimate weddings and elopements
- Lower prices for accommodations and venues
❌ Things to Consider
- Some restaurants, shops, and activities may have limited hours
- More unpredictable weather (occasional rain and wind)

Venues & Locations:
What Are The Best Wedding Venues On Catalina Island?
If you are having a “just us” elopement or inviting 10 guests or less, you can get by with not booking a wedding venue. However, if you are inviting more than 10 guests, I strongly recommend looking into booking a venue.
BEST VENUES FOR A SMALL, INTIMATE WEDDING: (Under 50 Guests)
Formerly the home of William Wrigley Jr., this historic cliffside mansion provides unparalleled panoramic views of Avalon and the Pacific Ocean. With a luxurious yet cozy atmosphere, it’s ideal for small weddings and elopements. The private, intimate setting ensures a special experience for couples and their closest loved ones.
2. Hotel Metropole’s Beach House
For couples who want a beachfront wedding without the crowds, the Metropole Beach House is a great choice. Located just steps from the sand, it provides a charming, boutique-style atmosphere with an ocean-view deck perfect for a ceremony or small reception.
If you love the idea of a classic, elegant setting, the Catalina Country Club offers a Spanish-style venue with beautiful courtyards and gardens. It’s great for an intimate ceremony followed by a cozy reception, with the option for both indoor and outdoor spaces.
4. Wrigley Memorial & Botanical Gardens
As of 2023, the Wrigley Memorial & Botanical Gardens no longer allows wedding ceremonies, however, I still love taking couples there for creative portraits!

BEST VENUES FOR LARGE WEDDINGS: (50+ Guests)
If you’re looking for a beachfront wedding with a mix of elegance and fun, Descanso Beach Club is the perfect venue. This private beach offers tented receptions, oceanfront dining, and fire pits, creating a laid-back yet sophisticated atmosphere. With a capacity of up to 500 guests, it’s ideal for large weddings that embrace the island’s coastal beauty.
2. Catherine’s Terrace at Descanso Beach
For a slightly smaller yet equally stunning option, Catherine’s Terrace offers a private oceanfront space with an indoor ballroom and outdoor patio. With a modern and stylish design, this venue can accommodate up to 200 guests, making it perfect for couples who want a balance between an elegant indoor setting and breathtaking ocean views.
A wedding at the Catalina Casino Ballroom is a truly grand and unforgettable experience, perfect for couples who want a blend of history, elegance, and breathtaking ocean views. Built in 1929, the Catalina Casino is one of the island’s most iconic landmarks, known for its Art Deco architecture, massive circular ballroom, and sweeping views of Avalon Bay.
4. Two Harbors – Banning House Lodge & Pavilion
For a more secluded, adventure-style wedding, Two Harbors offers a unique experience with stunning cliffside and oceanfront ceremony spots. The Banning House Lodge & Pavilion provides a rustic, intimate setting for receptions, while the surrounding beaches allow for scenic outdoor ceremonies. This location is great for couples who love the natural beauty of Catalina’s more remote areas.

UNLISTED LOCATIONS: (0-10 Guests)
Some of my favorite locations remain off this list, and I love taking eloping couples to my favorite scenic locations for their ceremony! If you are having a “just us” elopement or inviting 10 or fewer guests, learn more about how I can help you get married on Catalina Island!
Can We Have A Beach Wedding?
Yes. If you book your wedding through the Descanso Beach Club, which I highly recommend, they will handle the permit for you, otherwise, you will need to get a permit from the City of Avalon to have your ceremony on the public beach.

Vendors & Planning
Are There Local Wedding Vendors, Or Should We Bring Our Own?
Catalina has some local vendors, but many couples hire photographers, florists, and planners from the mainland. Some vendors may charge a travel fee. If you are interested in having a “just us” elopement or inviting 10 guests or less, I would love to help you elope on Catalina Island!
Is It Better To Hire A Catalina-Based Wedding Planner?
Whether you are having a “just us” elopement, an intimate ceremony with a few guests, or a full-on large-scale wedding, it’s important to hire a wedding planner who has experience with the type of event you want. You don’t want your wedding vendors, no matter how large or small, winging it on your wedding day. Your wedding planner may or may not live on Catalina Island, however, the important thing to consider is if they have the necessary experience.
Can We Bring In Outside Vendors?
Some venues allow outside vendors, but others require using their preferred list.

Is A Catalina Island Wedding Expensive?
It depends on the size and venue. Smaller elopements can be budget-friendly, while large weddings at Catherine’s Terrace or Descanso Beach Club will be more expensive. Travel costs for guests and vendors also add to the budget.

- Smaller weddings and elopements: $5,000 – $15,000
- Mid-sized weddings: $15,000 – $30,000
