Planning & Logistics For Eloping In Big Sur

📜 Do I need a permit to elope in Big Sur?

If you have your ceremony on state park land, yes, you will need a permit. If you have your wedding portraits taken on state park land, your photographer will need a permit. If you have your entire elopement on private property at a venue, you will not need a permit.

Luckily for you, I have an annual permit for portraits at Garrapata State Park and an event permit that will save you hundreds of dollars. This event permit is for Garrapata State Park as well as many beaches in Carmel-by-the-Sea and Monterey. You can have your simple beach or cliffside ceremony with up to 10 people in attendance (the wedding couple and vendors included).

📍 What are the best locations to elope in Big Sur?

There are many great locations to elope in Big Sur! Check out this guide I wrote that goes in depth about each area.

🗓️ When is the best time of year to elope in Big Sur?

Couples choose to elope in Big Sur at all times of the year for all kinds of reasons. The most popular times to get married are in the springtime when there are lot of wildflowers in bloom and the hills are lush and green. The summer and fall are also popular times to elope in Big Sur.

📜 How do I get a marriage license for my Big Sur elopement?

You get your California marriage license by applying at any of the California county clerk’s websites. A California marriage license obtained in any county is valid throughout the entire state! For couples that hire me, I give them detailed instructions on how, when, and where to get their CA marriage license depending on where they live or are flying into.

⚖️ What are the rules for eloping in state parks or private venues?

This will depend on each state park or private venue, but in general, private venues will give you more leeway to include personalized decorations for your ceremony, such as having floral arrangements, chairs, music, other wedding decor of your choice. You will need to inquire with each venue to find out. In general for state parks, they will want you to keep things much more simplified with no decorations or ceremonial set up.

🚗 How do I handle parking and accessibility at popular Big Sur spots?

Parking in Big Sur is on a first come, first served basis. There is no valet or reserved parking in Big Sur. For example, if the parking lot is full at Peiffer Beach, you will be turned away and will have to come back when there’s parking available. It’s best to have a backup plan to go to another beach or area in case your desired location is full.

👥 Are there any guest restrictions for elopements in Big Sur?

In general, at state parks, there will be a limit to how many guests can attend your elopement ceremony. At Garrapata State Park, where I am permitted, the total number of people is 10, including wedding vendors and the wedding couple. There will also be guest restrictions for elopements at private venues, depending on which package you opt for.

Weather & Timing For Eloping In Big Sur

🌦 What’s the weather like in Big Sur throughout the year?

That’s a great question! The weather is all over the place all of the time and very unpredictable! Big Sur’s coastal climate is ever-changing, with conditions that can shift from sunny to foggy or windy within hours. However, a few things remain consistent: the temperatures remain mild year-round, and it never snows. Big Sur is accessible year-round, as long as the road isn’t closed due to a mudslide.

Seasons In Big Sur

🌸 Spring (March – May)

✅ Why Choose Spring?

  • Comfortable temperatures: Mid-50s to low 70s°F
  • Lush greenery and blooming wildflowers (Calla Lily Valley, coastal succulents)
  • Fewer crowds compared to summer
  • A dreamy, romantic atmosphere with vibrant landscapes

❌ Things to Consider

  • Mornings can be chilly and foggy
  • Occasional light rain, especially in March
  • The area is vulnerable to road closures due to rain and mud slides
  • The road to Pheiffer Beach may be flooded over

Best for: Couples who love colorful scenery, moody fog, and fewer crowds.

☀️ Summer (June – August)

✅ Why Choose Summer?

  • Pleasant temperatures: High 50s to mid-70s°F
  • Longer daylight hours for elopements and photography
  • Beautiful sunsets over the Pacific Ocean
  • Warm, sunny weather in inland Redwoods

❌ Things to Consider

  • The marine layer can bring dense fog, especially in the mornings and evenings, typically known as “June gloom”
  • Coastal areas may feel cooler due to ocean breezes
  • Peak tourist season = more crowds and higher accommodation prices
  • Parking at popular locations can be limited

Best for: Couples who want long summer evenings and don’t mind some fog.

🍂 Fall (September – November)

✅ Why Choose Fall?

  • Some of the best weather: 60s and 70s°F
  • Minimal fog
  • Fewer tourists after the summer peak season
  • Clear coastal views and warm golden light for photos
  • Ideal for intimate, peaceful elopements

❌ Things to Consider

  • Early fall may still have some summer fog
  • Nights can be cooler, especially in November
  • Limited fall foliage, as Big Sur is mostly evergreen
  • Dried-up foliage along the coastline
  • Can be unpredictably windy

Best for: Couples looking for the perfect mix of mild weather, clear skies, and fewer crowds.

❄️ Winter (December – February)

✅ Why Choose Winter?

  • Cooler but still mild: Low 40s to mid-60s°F
  • Dramatic coastal waves and moody skies = stunning photography
  • The lushest, greenest landscapes of the year
  • Quietest season with minimal crowds

❌ Things to Consider

  • Rainy season, with potential road closures on Highway 1
  • Shorter daylight hours for elopements
  • Some trails and locations may be muddy or inaccessible

Best for: Couples who love dramatic scenery and cozy vibes and don’t mind a little rain.

In the Redwoods, I think the morning and early afternoon hours are ideal. For the coastal areas, I prefer the afternoon to capture the vibrant blue water and the golden hour to capture the sunset.

🚶‍♂️ What’s the best way to avoid crowds when eloping in Big Sur?

To avoid crowds in Big Sur, avoid eloping during popular holiday weekends like the Fourth of July and weekends in the summertime. Big Sur is a lot less busy when kids are in school.

📷 Do I need a photographer who specializes in Big Sur elopements?

💐 What vendors do I need for a Big Sur elopement (officiant, florist, etc.)?

This will really depend on what type of elopement experience you want. Some elopement photographers are ordained, such as myself, and happy to pronounce you married and sign your marriage license. However, if you are having a small ceremony with guests, I think it’s best to hire an officiant to perform the ceremony to enhance the guest experience.

I also highly recommend having a bouquet with you on your elopement day, as I believe a bouquet elevates your pictures. Many brides eloping to Big Sur also hire a professional hair and makeup artist to get them ready in the morning.

🏡 Are there local vendors, or should I bring my own?

There are some vendors located right in Big Sur; however, remember that the town of Big Sur is extremely small. Most do not live directly in Big Sur but will service the area.

🚁 Can I have a drone for my elopement photos?

Drones are not allowed at most California State Parks. If you elope at a private venue, you may be able to use a drone, depending on their rules.

🐶 Can we bring our dog to our Big Sur elopement?

There are some places that allow dogs, however, I’m not a big fan of bringing your dog to your elopement. They are not allowed in many areas in Big Sur, and you cannot leave your dog alone in the hotel room. Aside from the logistical problem of bringing your dog to your elopement, there’s poison oak in Big Sur.

👗 What should we wear for a Big Sur elopement?

For a Big Sur elopement, the couple’s attire should blend with the stunning natural surroundings while ensuring comfort and practicality. Here’s what to consider:

Bride’s Attire

  • Practicality for the Elements – Go for a half-up/half-down hairstyle that can withstand the breeze.
  • Lightweight, Flowing Gown – A flowy, bohemian-style gown or light, ethereal dress works well for outdoor ceremonies. Think silk, chiffon, or lace to move with the wind.
  • Comfortable Footwear – Avoid heels and opt for flat sandals, boots, or barefoot if you plan to walk along beaches or rugged trails.
  • Layering Pieces – Big Sur can be chilly, so bring a light jacket, shawl, or sweater. A leather jacket or denim jacket can add a bit of edge to your look.
  • Minimalistic Accessories – Consider natural, earthy accessories like a floral crown, delicate jewelry, or even a simple veil.

Groom’s Attire

  • Relaxed, Yet Stylish – Think casual but polished. A linen suit or vest with an open-collared shirt can look great while staying comfortable.
  • Comfortable Footwear – Avoid dress shoes; instead, opt for stylish boots or loafers that work well for outdoor terrain.
  • Layering for Warmth – Like the bride, the groom should bring a light jacket or sweater for warmth, especially in cooler months.
  • Accessories – A simple tie, suspenders, or even a vest will add to the rustic, nature-inspired vibe.
  • Natural Details – Think wooden cufflinks, a boutonnière made from local wildflowers, or a leather belt to add a touch of nature to the look.

General Tips

  • Consider the Terrain: The natural beauty of Big Sur means your elopement may involve hiking or walking on uneven ground, so choose comfortable shoes.
  • Dress for the Weather: Big Sur’s weather can change quickly, so plan for layers. Spring and fall can be cooler, while summer offers warmer but unpredictable temperatures.
  • Coordinate with the Landscape: Neutral, earthy tones such as ivory, soft whites, blush, sage green, or light grey complement the surroundings without overwhelming them.

💍 Can we have a small ceremony with a few guests?

Yes, you can! If you opt for a small ceremony on the beach or cliffside, you can have a group that does not exceed 10 people (guests, wedding vendors and the wedding couple included). If you opt to have your ceremony at a private venue, you will be able to invite however many guests they allow per their different packages.

Travel & Accommodations When Eloping In Big Sur

🏡 Where should we stay when eloping in Big Sur?

Between Big Sur and Carmel, there are dozens of hotels, resorts and vacation rentals to choose from.
